Building a Book Series from Start to Middle

Some authors build a story, I let the story come alive and tell itself. I'm just the lucky one, chosen to be the secretary.  I start writing and go where it leads me.  Life has many twists and turns in it and I think my stories reflect that quality.

Every story has a beginning middle and end.  Each book has a beginning middle and end.  With book three, I’m getting the feeling that we are only in the middle of this epic journey.  While I have an idea where it is going, I don’t yet know how it will get there.

Since I don’t have an actual outline – they never work right for me – I “fly by the seat of my pants” and I believe I can see the end.  Hopefully, you are all enjoying the ride with me and don’t want it to end yet either.

I think one of the key parts of watching a series come to life, is just knowing what direction it is going in and where you want to be when the ride stops.  Of course, we meet and influence other people along the way, but that gives room for other stories to branch out.

Life is all around us and the imagination is endless.  It takes a lot of work and dedication to perform as a secretary for such a long series, but the rewards are terrific.  I don’t know how many times I’ve had to scrap parts of the story simply because I got something wrong.  Thankfully, I have the opportunity to edit and revise and edit and revise and then repeat that a few hundred times before I release it for others.

Having a good support team is an immense help.  Sometimes just talking a situation through is enough to clear the mind.  Even if it isn’t, having people who support my secretarial endeavors is extremely precious to me.

Join me and the group of friends from Tunuftol as their journey continues!

BLURB

For the people of Tunuftol, and other countries on the planet Nyssa, names found them starting at twelve months old… at the earliest. Along with the names came certain skills or powers. Depending on what you did with your powers determined what type of person you were, and sometimes affected future names. Therefore, names had great importance in Tunuftol, and Krissa had more than a few… nine to be exact. Her full name was Krissa Lysandra Rue Alverna Harley Mya Magryta Freya Wittek, which is quite a mouthful.

The dangers haven't ended for our friends yet. The weather is starting to warm and the war started last fall is under way. Journey with Krissa and the crew as they struggle to keep their world safe and find their place in it.

AUTHOR BIO
I grew up in Vermont mostly and now live in Virginia with my family (those still at home). My husband and I have a blended family of seven kids. My childhood was spent moving around a lot. (non-military) About five years ago, we started home-schooling our youngest children. Now there are only two remaining in home-school. I have tried to nurture the love of books in our children and now our grandchildren -- always nurturing their imaginations. Recently, I have become active in our community with literacy, starting a local (and online) creative writing club and volunteer tutoring at the Adult Learning Center.
I struggle with Fibromyalgia and PTSD. So, have to be careful not to overdo things... I don't always listen to my own advice. I have a dry, sarcastic and corny sense of humor and always try to look at things optimistically. (again not always successful) However, I feel that if I don't give up -- for long -- then things will work out for the best eventually.

Two have powers they must use
Or, One friend in death will lose.

EXCERPT
Krissa sat up, instantly wide-awake. She gasped to catch her breath. This was not a
good thing. There were only two lines that stood out at the time was that one of her
friends could die on their quest!

What about all the other stuff? She would have to tell them all about it. Looking
over at the clock, she realized that breakfast would be ready before long, so she decided
to go ahead and get up. There wasn't enough time to get back to sleep anyway.

The palace held onto the night's stillness. Only a few servants and guards were
moving around as Krissa left her room. Normally she wouldn't consider herself a
"morning person", but the song she heard in her dream made it impossible to sit still. She
repeated it as she wandered about the palace without any goal.

"Twelve companions all will travel, Eleven this song try to unravel, Ten don't know
which is the way, Nine are going to have to pay," she mumbled as she turned a corner.
"Eight are wondering what they will find, Seven speak with mouth and mind, Six shall
get a brand new name, Five will never be the same…" She stepped out onto the rooftop
garden. It was so peaceful in the early morning light. "Four the enemy will take; Three
have choices they must make," she sighed. At least she wasn't the only one that would
have to make a decision. "Two have powers they must use or one friend in death will
lose." Krissa shuddered. Were they truly ready for all they were getting themselves into?
She walked over and sat on a bench. Well, obviously Krissa wouldn't figure this one out
on her own. She sighed again.

EXCERPT
"I know," the man said with a sigh. He placed his other hand on the back of
Khevin's head and touched foreheads with his son. Stepping back, he leaned over, gave
Pin a kiss on her nose, and hugged her tightly.

Sealey stepped over to Krissa and handed her one of the heavier bags. "Let me know when you need me to help with it. We have a long way to go, and it can get heavy after a while."

"I can handle it. Thanks," she said and swung the bag to her back.

"I don't doubt that, but I wouldn‘t want you to strain yourself just before we need you to work your magic…literally," he said with a growing smirk. "I wonder whose wrath I would rather deal with…The Prince, or the Chosen One. Something tells me I'd rather deal with his."

Sealey chuckled, enjoying himself. He moved nimbly to avoid Krissa's swinging arm, despite the extra weight he carried, and followed everyone else onto the porch. When Krissa got to the door, he held it open for her.

"I'm afraid I might have to take your wrath, as well, for that one," he whispered to her as she went through the door.
"You might," Krissa said with what she hoped was an evil looking grin.

Daisy Mae waddled through all the legs and Krissa saw a bag strapped to her back. It had a small loop at her collar for Philetus to hold. She smiled at the thought of the small fuzzy creature riding on the round old beagle, and walked to the railing beside Micah.

"You have everything?" Grandma Athey asked Khevin. He nodded and she turned to Daisy Mae. "Well, old girl. You take care of yourself…and my pack of strays.

I‘ll hold down the fort, as usual."

The gray-haired woman bent down and rubbed the dogs head lovingly. She walked over to Micah and Krissa then and held her arms out to them both. Micah hugged her tightly and Krissa hugged over him.

"I will miss you both. You remember to listen to your dreams. Pin will be there to provide clarity and strength to them, so you won't have trouble remembering the important ones," she told them.

Pulling back from the hugs Grandma Athey took Micah‘s face in her wrinkled hands. "You pay close attention to what you see young man. Even if you don't understand it right away, it could still be important." She put a hand on Krissa's arm."Krissa, my dear, you will have some difficult times ahead, but you have the right people around you to help with them."
