Sounds great! So, what started you on your journey to be a writer?
After reading the infamous 50 Shades of Grey, I told my friends that if a woman in her forties can write something this hot and racy, well I certainly can give it a try. 

That's a racy title! What’s your current guilty pleasure?Lindt- dark chocolate candy bars.

Great! Now I want one :-) If you weren't a writer, what you would be?Fashion designer or makeup artist.

When did you decide to become a writer?About two years ago. 

Why did you choose the genre you write in?I’m a romance junky. I love that mushy-gushy feeling you get from reading a romantic scene.

Me too!! How long did it take you to write your current book?Six months- it’s difficult for me to find extra time because I’m a mom, caregiver and I work 4 days out of the week.

I totally understand that! Six months is great with everything else you have going on! Where do you get your inspiration?
Don’t laugh, but every time I step into my shower, turn on the water to HOT, the ideas just start to flow :-)

I won't laugh... same thing happens to a lot of us. How many books do you read/month?
Because I’m dedicating all my free time to completing my series, I haven’t read as much as I usually do. I can read about 5-10 books a month

If you could write outside your genre what would that be?
Fantasy fiction.

Are you writing something else at the moment?
Finding our Forever is the second book in the Forever series. I just completed it and now I will be starting the writing for Ending with Forever, the third and final book in my series.

My one and only aspiration for this book is to have readers embrace my story and characters with their heart.If I can make someone laugh till their gut hurts, hate the villain with vengeance, cry till their eyes dry out, fall in love all over again, and drool over the hero or feel any other emotions, than I've succeeded my goal.
I’m the sappiest person in the world when it comes to romance. Don’t smirk! I believe in love at first sight, Prince Charming or in my book,Mr. Hot Billionaire, and happy endings. I had a chance to sit down with Alix, and here is a bit about her and her process. 

How would you describe your book in 20 words or less without using the blurb? It's a story about recognizing love. 

State a random fact about yourself that would surprise your readers. I discovered and fell in love with romance books only a few years ago. Until then I'd been a hardcore science fiction fan. 

Have you always wanted to be a writer? Yes. But before the advent of direct publishing I didn't dare dream it was possible. 

What are your favorite hobbies? Reading and cinema. My idea of fun is to consume fiction, as you can see. 

Do you have a day job? Unfortunately, yes. 

Ha, ha. I know the feeling. What do you love about writing? The inspired moments when I can't type fast enough. 

What’s the hardest part of writing a book? Discovering upon rereading that a scene you were really pleased about when you wrote is actually really bad. 

But it's also great on rereading a scene and finding it is better than you thought! ;-) Did you do any research before start or during of the writing of the books? I do most of my research after I complete the first draft. 

Your favorite books and author?

In sci-fi, it’s “Rendezvous with Rama” and "Childhood's End" by Arthur C. Clarke’s, "I, Robot" by Isaac Asimov,"Fahrenheit 451" and "The Martian Chronicles" by Ray Bradbury's,. 

In romance / chick lit, I love nearly all books by Marian Keyes, India Knight, Courtney Milan, Katarina Mazetti, Judith Ivory, Tessa Dare and Kresley Cole. 

How important do you find the communication between you and your readers? Do you reply to their messages or read their reviews? I read every review and reply to every message. Hearing from the readers is vital for me. 

Morning person or night owl?  Night owl.

Me too!! What are your thoughts on ebooks? Love ebooks, love my Kindle, yay!

How many more books can we expect in this series? The current plan is for six novels and five novellas. But I may end up writing more.

~Excerpt~

"Can we be friends again?" he asked.

"So you think we were friends?"

He nodded.

She arched her brows. "And you think you can be friends with me and Amanda at the same time?"

"Why not?"

"Can be a health hazard, what with all the sparks that fly."

He grinned. "Never mind Amanda's taunts. She's like that with everyone."

"Nefarious?"

"Spiky. But she's a sweetheart, once you've grown on her."

"I wonder how I could ever accomplish that." Lena smiled, a speck of sadness still lingering in her eyes.

He stared, mesmerized. He could never get enough of that smile.

A cloud hiding the moon must have shifted, because suddenly silver light poured over the terrace turning it into an enchanted place.

Lena gasped. "What happened to your hand?"

He followed her gaze and saw that the knuckles of his right hand were smeared with blood. Shit. He could bet there'd been none after he punched the wall.

He covered the abrasions with his other hand. "It's nothing."

She grabbed his wrist and yanked his hand closer to her face. "Have you disinfected them?"

Rob didn't register her question. He looked at her delicate fingers holding up his hand. Then at her face. She was squinting at his hand, trying to assess the seriousness of his cuts. Her gesture was devoid of any erotic subtext. And yet the contact of her skin scorched him, just like when he held her hand at L'Espace. It stirred an impulse inside him that was both feverishly raw and infinitely gentle. It made his heart bump against his ribcage as if demanding to get out.

He gazed at her hands holding his. The urge to run his fingertips over her skin, from her nails down to her wrist and then inside her palm was too overwhelming to resist. . .

"So have you?" she asked.

Rob blinked and looked up. "Have I what?"

"Disinfected."

"It's just a graze."

"I have a disinfectant in my suitcase," she said. "I can fetch it--"

And release my hand? "Stay," he blurted out. Shit. "I mean, I also brought some, so you don't need to bother. I'll disinfect as soon as I get back to my room. I promise."

"OK," she said softly and let go of him.

Interview with Melissa Mayberry - Author of Mellifica

Today, I'm pleased to interview an author I have participated in different Facebook groups with and met over at Critique Circle, but have never really gotten a chance to know, Melissa Mayberry. I'm excited to talk about her life and her Mature YA Romance book, Mellifica: Devastating First Love. First, let's check out the book cover and description!

At sixteen years old, Melissa has already found her Prince Charming. Sandy, the school’s most popular boy, graces her with a dream-like romance. However, a bold and dominating stranger named Arien quickly enters the picture and steals the girl’s heart while at summer camp.

Alright, thanks for being here, Melissa. Let's get right to it. How would you describe your book in 20 words or less without using the blurb?

As most authors, I get “What’s your book about?” a lot. In person, they usually get to know the ironic ending to book two, followed by a google search to prove it really happened. For the record, we’ll go with this:

My high school sweetheart dumped me for a teacher’s widow. It humiliated me, but I found a way to survive.

Poor girl. From this and the blurb, it sounds like it was rough. Let's find out a little bit about you. Where would you live if you could live anywhere in the world?

I travel as a nurse to various places across the United States. Every time I return to my home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, I’m awestruck. This is where I want to be.

What’s your current guilty pleasure?

The main male character in my book, Mellifica, drinks strawberry soda so much that his kiss tastes like it. I love Sandy, and have developed a strawberry soda habit of my own. My husband even buys it for me (but I haven’t told him why …)

Haha - well, if your kissing start tasting like strawberry, hopefully your husband just enjoys it too! Did you have support at the beginning and/or during your writing?

I’ve done so many different things in my lifetime. When I started writing again, I got the eye-roll. As a matter of fact, my husband hasn’t even read Mellifica. If I have one regret about that, it’s that I haven’t told my parents that I’ve been published. If you’ve read Mellifica, you’d understand the relationship and why my success is a secret.

So this is part fiction, but part autobiography? That has to be hard. 

The main character, Mel, is me twenty years ago. The struggle there was relating to myself, not as I am now, but how I was then. I took everything personally then, now I look back and think I might have been crazy.

I think we are all super sensitive at that age. It is hard. What is it you love most about writing? What's the hardest part of writing for you?

Mellifica is written in first person and as a personal account of a humiliating break-up. The biggest hurdle was remembering the torment and putting it in writing. Subsequently, writing this book has become therapy for me.

Therapy through writing. I completely understand that. I do the same thing. Where do you get your inspiration?

I wrote an entire article to answer this question. I’ll try to make it brief here. 1. The story had to be written. 2. My character’s made me love them and keep going 3. My critiquing partners. Without them, I would have quit after chapter two.

Sounds like you have a good support system to keep you going. That's great. Which genres do you prefer to read?

I love romance, and I love YA. I have a teenage daughter and it’s so much more fun to read when I can talk to her about the story. I usually read it first (I’m the one with the money) and when she reads it she’s comes to me and says, “Mom, like OMG …”

I say, “I know with the …”

She says “Yes! And then they …”

Then I say: “I told you so!” And my husband stares at us and blinks. 

That's awesome that you can share with her that way! Do you prefer Twitter or Facebook?

I’m a Facebook Junkie!

If I give you a time machine, what time period and in what place would you travel to? 

I would go to England during the early 1900’s. Oddly enough I love Steam punk, but I don’t think I know enough to write it. 

Are you writing something else at the moment?

I am working on two new books, while Mellifica 2 is in editing. We hope to have it out by early winter, but I haven’t come up with a subtitle yet!

Excerpt from Chapter 1:

The party fell quiet while we waited. A blue Dodge Caravan stopped at the edge of the beach. Oh yeah, Chad said he’d come. Even though the van was a brand new 1992 model, my cousin looked like a dork driving a minivan. “It’s okay. It’s my cousin, but keep the liquor in your bag, Shanna.”

“Aww, is Chad some kind of nark?” she asked.

I nodded. “Most likely.”

Chad stepped out, but to my surprise the passenger door opened too. Why would he bring a date to my birthday party? Asshole. It’d be better without him here, and definitely better without one of those girls he hung out with.

A stranger stepped out of the van, and his eyes fell right to mine. From a distance, he didn’t appear to be the geeky type of friend Chad always made. He wore a loose black tank top with Khaki shorts. His clothes seemed pretty normal, especially compared to Chad’s; my cousin wore a Henley tucked into his cargo shorts. The strange guy stared, and I couldn’t turn away.

 He came over with Chad, king of the geeks. Where did he get the confidence to stare at me? They walked closer, and even though the beach was dim, his onyx eyes struck me intensely. My chest tightened, and my heart raced. As if this guy gave him confidence, Chad walked a little straighter than usual.

“Hello, Melissa. Happy birthday,” Chad said.

I nodded, glanced at Chad for a second and then back to his guest.

“Oh, this is Arien, my best friend.” Chad gestured toward his tall, muscular friend. “And this is Melissa, my cousin.”

Arien nodded. “Hey.”

When did Chad get a best friend? I would have seen him before.  Something wasn’t right about this guy or his sudden appearance.

Sandy wrapped both arms around me and leaned closer to my ear. “Want to go for a walk?”

Sandy’s voice startled me. This suspicious stranger had my brain working overtime.  “Um, I do, but Chad just got here. I can’t be rude.” I turned to the new arrivals. “Food and drinks are on the table. Get a plate and come back to join us.”

            Why haven’t I met this guy? They returned from the table. Both had soda, but neither was eating. Chad turned toward the river where some people still played. “Who’s here?”

            I didn’t pay attention to Chad.

“Melissa, I asked you a question,” Chad said louder.

“Hmm?”

Everyone turned to me as I dropped my stare from Arien. A flame went through my body, and I wanted to run to the river’s edge. Arien smirked. He had been staring back, as if he had a chance with me. Huge ego—he must be Chad’s best friend.

I had to play the situation off as mere curiosity, so I squared my shoulders and cleared my throat. “So, Arien, if you and Chad are best friends, why haven’t we met?”

He looked at me and raised an eyebrow. “I guess we just missed each other.”  The warm gaze in his eyes made me think his words carried a double meaning. His wavy blond hair caught the sea breeze, and the firelight danced across his face.

I leaned against Sandy to ensure we all understood this stranger didn’t have a chance with me.

Welcome, Stephanie! Now that we've read the blurb, tell us a bit more about your new release? The Fallen Stars continues the story of Kellen and Calienta from The Star Child. We meet up with them at their wedding. However, they are immediately attacked by a group of faeries and forced to flee the scene with Kellen’s best friend, Gabe. The Fallen Stars sees them on the run and not knowing who to trust. Their love and loyalties are tested.

Sounds like a lot of excitement going on! 

Writing can be a very lonely occupation, and support is very important. Who are your cheerleaders? My SCBWI (Society For Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) critique group. They are actually mentioned individually in the acknowledgement section of this book because they are so wonderful. They encouraged me to “rip of the scab” when I wrote this. I love ‘em.

I couldn't make it without my critique group as well. I'm glad you have a good group. Did you have support at the beginning and/or during your writing? Yes. My husband and kids have been PHENOMENAL. My husband reads everything I write. He knows all of the characters inside out. He tells me when I’m not being romantic enough. ;)

It's great when the family is involved and good your husband keeps you on track! Do you write at a laptop/desktop or do you write freehand? I have an awesome desk that I write at. It’s in the middle of everything, but I love it and it’s my special place.

What’s your favorite part of writing a book? World building. I love creating a completely different mood and atmosphere for every book and making the characters come alive within it. It becomes my own personal escape and, eventually, an escape for readers.

Which scenes were the hardest to write? The intensely emotional scenes! I was raised to never really show emotion or to talk about it. I’ve tried to approach my life differently, but it doesn’t come easily to me. Writing those types of scenes are often brutal for me. However, emotions are natural and it makes sense that realistic characters would have them.

Definitely need those emotions, but I agree it can be difficult to write. How long did it take you to write your current book? Twelve weeks.

Did you do any research before start or during of the writing of the books? Yes. With The Fallen Stars I took a trip to Maine and did research. With The Star Child I read books on Celtic Mythology. I’d been to Ireland as well.

What is the one book that you think everyone should read? The Book Of Dreams by OR Melling.

How important do you find the communication between you and your readers? Do you reply to their messages or read their reviews? Extremely important! I read every review, I respond to every comment on every blog post (unless I miss it unintentionally), I respond on Twitter and Facebook..Readers matter – without them where would writers be?

I completely agree. If you could visit any place in the world or a place created by a book, where would you visit? Hogwarts Castle. :-)

Awesome! I want to come along! So, are you working on any other projects except writing, right now? Yes, I am editing the third and final book in The Star Child series. It’s called The Star Catcher.

Interview ~ Self-help/parenting help author Daniel Alexander

Happy Friday, everyone! Today I had a chance to get together with Daniel Alexander and find out a bit more about him and his book, Through the Crimson Mirror, a non-fiction, autobiography, self-help, parenting book. Check out his cover and description. 

Do you know how concerned parents who are looking for ways to better understand their children have read all the old material and still can’t seem to get the right results? Teenage depression continues to soar, more and more girls are having unwanted pregnancies and abortions, drug and alcohol use continues to climb, in areas such as this, x-parties are becoming more and more frequent; the list goes on and on.

What I do is show life from a child’s point of view, which gives parents a more complete picture so they can better understand their children, better understand their feelings and attitudes and give them a better start to life.

I also show people who are facing difficulties that they are not alone, which is often their greatest, unspoken fear.

I’m looking for parents, people who are facing difficulties.

Okay, Daniel, thanks for being here! Let's get right to the interview. How would you describe your book in 20 words or less without using the blurb?

A story that touches many people today. One of courage, learning, growing, bravery.

Writing can be lonely. Did you have support at the beginning and/or during your writing? 

I have two great editors who helped me through most of the process. I say they helped me through the process, because I didn’t pay them. They offered to do it for free for me, so it really was just good old fashioned help.

That is wonderful. A great support group is always a plus. 

Do you read reviews written about your book? 

Yes! I encourage people to tell me the good and bad. The only way to grow is to get honest feedback. Fortunately, most of it has been good so far.

I love reviews! It's so fun to interact with readers. So, do you write at a laptop/desktop or do you write freehand?

A little bit of all of those. Most of the beginning of my writing was done free hand. Then it moved to desktop, and sometimes I write in coffee shops on my laptop.

What’s the hardest part of writing a book? 

Starting. Without a doubt that first word is the most challenging!

I have to agree. And you edit that first word so many times! So, why did you choose the genre you write in? 

I choose this genre because I want to make a difference.

That's admirable. I suppose we all have our different goals. I imagine it's nice to know you're helping people. Did you do any research before start or during of the writing of the books? 

Yes, lots of research. I love learning, so this was really cool for me. I read many books to support what I said. In addition, I did many interviews with a range of people including students, teachers, mental-health professionals, people in prison, reformed alcoholics and drug addicts, and many more.

Sounds like it was a long process and a lot of research involved for sure. Most authors are readers too. Which genres do you prefer to read? 

Most non-fiction. But I tend to write differently to what I read. I read very factual books, and wrote my book more as a story with human interest. It’s a best of both, a story so it’s easy to read, but it has all the facts.

I have to be honest, I don't really like dry, factual nonfiction. Your book sounds like something I could enjoy.

How important do you find the communication between you and your readers? Do you reply to their messages or read their reviews? 

Yes. I’ve regularly chat with some of my fans. I’m not selling books to sell books, I’m selling books to make a difference in people’s lives, so staying in touch is a big thing for me.

Have you ever Googled yourself? 

Yip. Who hasn’t…

:-) Your cover says this is book one. How many more books can we expect in this series? 

There are three books in the series in total. I spoke to people before publishing my book, and because so many people are busy today, they’d rather have multiple shorter books, than one long one. I took all their advice and split my original book into three. Most people that have read the first did so in a night. So mission accomplished.

Sounds like you've put all that research to good use with three books and written in a story manner. Congratulations on the books and I really do appreciate you taking the time to do this interview! 

About Daniel Alexander:

I was born in Durban, South Africa.I was born in 1983, which means I'll turn 30 in the year 2013 (which is the year in which I'm writing this page). For many years, I worked as a programmer, but after suffering from depression, I wrote my book and my story, and now work to try prevent more and more people from slipping into depression and related illnesses. Most of that is done via my book, and for local groups, I do talks. The speaking is something that I wish to grow, and eventually want to become a professional speaker.

Due to my research, experience and interviews, I am very knowledgeable in a wide range of topics that us human-beings have to deal with, including: communication, education, relationships, sex, mental-health, addiction and more. #Interview ~ Women's fiction author Karina Gioertz

Happy Friday everyone! Today, I'm happy to have Karina Gioertz over for a chat and to tell us about her women's fiction novel, Country Girls. We're going to chat about hers and the star of Country Girls', Eli Wilson, relationship. First, let me show you her cover and let you read the book blurb!

I'm so pleased to have you here, Karina. I'm so anxious to read some of your books. They've been bought and loaded on my Kindle. I just need more reading time! 

Anyway, on to the interview. How did you and Eli meet and how long ago was it? 

Eli and I met about four years ago in Granite Bay, California. I was just driving down the road, blasting my music and listening to Jason Aldean’s “She’s Country” when Eli just popped up out of nowhere and decided to come along for the ride. 

Some of them do that... What was your first impression of each other? 

I think we were immediately drawn to one another. Eli is far gutsier than I am, but I think she could tell that deep down, I wasn’t that unlike her. We’re both country girls at heart who love their families above all else and curse like sailors, no matter who’s listening. 

What does Eli do that annoys you the most?

Eli’s pretty stubborn which can be a little frustrating at times… 

Eli, if you could say just one thing to Karina, what would it be? 

Let me buy you a beer. (That’s like saying “I love you” in Eli lingo…) 

Haha - whatever works! What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened between you two? 

We don’t generally talk about this, but I know Eli wasn’t too pleased about the fact that I was around to see her get so worked up over wondering what Shawn was up to. It was bad enough for her to feel so annoyingly vulnerable, but to know that I saw the whole thing only made it more humiliating. 

Sometimes it is tough to let people see us at our most vulnerable. What do you feel the worst about doing to Eli? 

It broke my heart to write about Eli and her mother. In fact, I cried as I was writing it, but I knew that out of the three Wilson girls, Eli was the strongest. It had to be her experience. If it had been either one of her sisters, it would have changed the story entirely. 

Do you think you two will meet again in the future?

Oh, I think we might :-) In fact, I was just wondering how things were going down at the Wilson Ranch earlier this morning. Maybe it’s time to plan another visit…

Although Karina Gioertz has been writing for most of her life, it never quite registered with her as something out of the ordinary, because it was so closely connected to who she was. It wasn't until she became a stay at home mom and finally took the time to write an entire book from beginning to end, that she understood what all of those ideas she'd been jotting down were for. Since then, she has written several books, including Country Girls, Lucky In Love and Blood Bound.
