#BookReview ~ Just a Little Twisted ~ Poetry

Title: Just a Little Twisted
Author: Royal The 17th
Genre: Poetry
Rating: 5 stars!

Literature is something that is read in a stuffy classroom; poetry is written in times of captivating emotion and tragedy. I have crafted these poems with the influence of happiness, sadness, inspiration, and twisted delusions. That is what these poems depict. Venture inside a mind that is not quite right; venture inside a mind that is just a little twisted.

My Review:
Some of you may know that I helped Royal as his mentor during the publishing of this book for his senior project. Honestly, I didn't know how good (or bad) his poetry would be, considering he is so young and I know nothing about poetry, but I knew places to send him to get help polishing his work and also seeing whether or not his poetry was great. It reads great, and I found it very emotionally touching, disturbing, and a whole gambit of emotions reading it, but I only know what I like, not what is considered great art.

Apparently, great art is entirely subjective. Royal has a mixture of love poems, sad poems, poems that are from the mind of a confused person who is hurting and uncertain what to do in life. They are touching and relevant. The imagery he evokes totally blew me away with it's maturity and incite into how messy and confusing, yet wonderful, life can be.

So proud of him and looking forward to his future career. Royal is also planning on writing novels, and he definitely has the creativity and drive to do it. I can't wait for his next project!

Set in Berkeley, California, Whole Latte Love is an opposites-attract romance mixing bluesy rock music, hot, steamy love scenes, and financial shenanigans.

Whole Latte Love (Excerpt) by Rachelle Ayala

Carina Chen had no time for nonsense.
“Show off.” She couldn’t help glaring at the shaggy-haired barista as he demonstrated the art of milk frothing to a gaggle of college girls.
Hair flipping and eyelashes fluttering, they oohed and ahhed nonstop while he spun milk underneath the steam nozzle. When he layered the milk over a cup of espresso, they squealed as if they were in the middle of a group orgasm.
Carina elbowed her way through the crowded coffee shop and ordered her cup from the female barista, whose line was much shorter. Serving lattes didn’t require sleek muscles and gem-blue eyes.
“Yummy.” Her friend Sheila checked her watch. “I come just to watch the show. Wonder which one he’ll take home tonight.”
“Only one?” Carina set her cup on the table. “Enough about him. I still haven’t found a room for the summer. Didn’t you say you had a friend needing a renter?”
Sheila stole her gaze from the demonstration of coffee-making prowess and licked her lips. “Yeah, let’s wait for his break, and I’ll introduce you.”
Carina looked toward the espresso machine. “Him? Never mind. I’m not sure I could stomach the guy. He’s got to be full of himself.”
Sheila’s eyes wandered back to the front counter and lingered. “You have to admit, he’s hotter than the Sahara.”
“That’s exactly my point.” Carina watched him hand a steaming mug to a perky cheerleader. His mischievous smile did funny things to her insides and it wasn’t even directed at her. “I need a quiet place to crash after my eighteen-hour days, not some bachelor pad with nightly orgies. I can imagine the revolving door on his bedroom. No thanks.”
Despite her hasty denial, warm flutters bubbled in her belly when the barista stepped out from behind the counter. He was broad-shouldered, but not bulky, and he moved with the easy grace of a mountain lion as he collected the empties. Heck, the man probably boosted Abercrombie & Fitch’s stock price two full points each time he bent over to wipe a table.
“You could at least meet the guy before you pass judgment.” Sheila folded her arms. “Look, the important thing is, he has a great apartment close to the Berkeley BART station.”
Easy access to rapid transit was a point in his favor, but … “You sure he’s safe?”
“I promise. Dylan’s a boy scout. Besides,” Sheila said with a sly smile, “an orgy or two might do you some good.”
While Carina struggled to close her gaping mouth, Sheila raised a hand to wave him over.
Dylan wiped his palms on his apron and pulled a stool from the next table.
“Hey, what’s up?” He greeted Sheila with a nod and trained his eyes on Carina.
Up close, he was even more swoonworthy. Wavy brown hair hung almost to his neck, and his jaw was stubbly, as if he’d forgotten to shave a day or two. His presence filled all available breathing space between them, and his piercing gaze felt like a tractor beam drawing Carina toward him.
“Dyl, this is Carina Chen. She needs a room to rent,” Sheila said. “She’s working at Mogul this summer.”
“Nice to meet you,” Dylan said. “Investment banking?”
“Intern analyst.” Carina tamped down the pride swelling in her chest as well as a more worrying heat in her lower regions. “I got the offer two days ago, last minute.”
“Cool!” He gave her a thumbs up, and the thick silver cuff on his wrist glinted in the late afternoon sunlight coming through the window. “My roommate moved out two days ago. Must be fate.”
It had to be the sun’s heat that was making her sweat under her suit jacket. Nope, it was definitely not Dylan’s sideways grin nor the way his veins moved over his large hands when he flexed his fingers.
“How much?” Carina’s voice barely squeaked past her tight vocal cords.
“Your share of the rent’s twelve-hundred a month. We split the utilities. You get your own bedroom but we’ll share a bathroom.”
Sharing a bathroom with a guy might get tricky. Where would she hide her feminine products?
“You’ll love it,” Sheila cut in. “It’s close to shopping, restaurants, and the campus.”
“That’s so much more than I paid in Philadelphia,” Carina said. “I don’t know Berkeley very well. Is that what rentals go for around here?”
“It’s much less than San Francisco, especially the Financial District.” Sheila hopped off her barstool. “I gotta hit the loo. Text me when you’re ready to leave.”
“Wait, I’m not sure.” Carina faltered. Why was she acting like this was a blind date? It wasn’t like she hadn’t lived in a coed dorm before. Besides, a guy satisfied to work in a coffee shop was not her type, so there should be no worries whatsoever about wanting him for a boyfriend.
Dylan placed his smartphone on the table. “I have to get back to the job. Call yourself from my cell so I’ll have your number.”
Zing. His killer grin hit the mark, right between her thighs. The guy knew what he was doing. Oh no, she wasn’t giving her number to that kind of man. She’d ask Sheila if she knew of any women needing roommates. She still had one more day to hit the streets and go over listings, and she most definitely was not going to be another phone number on his to-call list.
“I still have a few other places to check out.” Carina picked up her coffee cup. “Do you think I could get a takeout cup for this?”
Dylan grasped the handle, his fingers lingering a beat too long against hers. “Even better. I’ll make you a new one. This one’s cold.”
Carina’s cheeks warmed as a tingly shiver worked its way up her arm. Geez, she wasn’t usually this hormonal.
“Wait, your phone …” Carina picked up Dylan’s phone and walked toward the counter where he prepared the coffee. A poster plastered on the wall showed him strutting with his guitar onstage with a band called The Licked Blues. They had a gig at a club later this evening. Typical. Another guy wasting his life away with no prospect of financial success.
“Almost done.” Dylan layered the espresso on the bottom of the cup and dipped the milk pitcher up, then lowered it and cut across.
Carina gasped as a creamy heart floated to the top.
He handed her the takeout cup and rested one elbow on the counter. “Carina, if you room with me, I’ll have one of these for you every morning.”
His voice caressed her name like the languid beckon of a lover calling her back to bed.
Carina swallowed hard, but before she could respond, Dylan swung toward an elderly woman positioning her walker to get out of a booth. The college girls waved and vied for his attention, but he took his time helping the woman to the door before going back for their orders.
I’m a goner now.
Carina typed her number into Dylan’s phone.

I Call Him Brady

A New Contemporary Romance by K.S. Thomas

Born the only son to one of Hollywood's most prominent power couples, Jack Cole's life is damn near perfect. With women lining up to be with him, movie parts most seasoned actors would die for and the freedom to live above the rules, Jack's life is going completely according to plan.

Until Embers...

Embers doesn't have time to waste on any more dirt-bags. Too busy trying to take care of herself and her daughter to take any more chances on romance, she's limiting her love life to daydreaming about one hot and sexy, Jack Cole.

Except her surefire way to keep her heart safe goes completely awry when her dream guy and her reality suddenly collide.

A master of recreating the human emotions he's never allowed himself to feel, Jack must now deal with the consequences of offering his heart to someone who may be too scared to keep it.

*
Holy Shit.
That’s freaking Jack Cole! What do I do?
Nothing. I do nothing. Shit. Am I blushing? Don’t blush. Do NOT blush. What am
I talking about?! Forget blushing! Don’t faint!
I could already feel the
telltale signs of a full blown anxiety attack announcing themselves via the
heart pounding out of my chest like a sledgehammer and the cold numbness
setting in around my ankles.
My first instinct was to shut my eyes and take several deep breaths, but then I
realized how insane I’d look and squashed that plan immediately. Instead, I
focused all of my attention on the silver metal doors ahead. Still slightly
maniacal, but then Mr. Cole seemed too wrapped up in his own problems to take
notice of mine.
With my eyes steadily staring straight ahead, my ears were free to drop in on his
conversation with unconscionable ease. My frantic heart froze the moment my
brain registered what my wandering ears had heard. Jack Cole had dropped his
model of the month girlfriend. He was single! I had to remind myself that in
all reality, this information – however exciting it seemed – actually would
have no bearing on me or my relationship status.
In the midst of forcefully hiding all of my Jack Cole madness, I had forgotten one
minor detail. The tiny person to my left, who at any given moment could glance
up and recognize the man of my every fantasy and sell me out faster than a girl
scout peddling cookies to a pothead.
My daughter was no evil genius, but she was five with no inhibitions and a knack for listening in on my grown up conversations. She wouldn’t think twice before blurting out his name and asking him to marry me. In fact, I’d once had a daydream just like that, only in my warped and lonely mind, he had found her so adorable he had said yes on the spot. To be fair, my daughter didn’t hear ‘no’ from people often, something I hoped would work in my favor one day, but I digress.
I carefully lowered my gaze from the safety of the elevator doors to take a peek at Jessa. Much to my relief she was far too involved in chatting with Mermella the mermaid to pay attention to anything else.
Just as my eyes re-centered themselves on the shiny metal ahead, the door slid open
revealing a large group of people eager to board the elevator. This was my
floor. I had two choices. Either stay on and ride the elevator aimlessly in
hopes of basking in Jack Cole’s presence a moment longer like a stalker, or get
off.
Before my head had a chance to decide, my body took over, moving on autopilot and
taking me onward as I had originally programmed it to do when I first boarded
the moving metal box.
I said a silent goodbye to my once in a lifetime opportunity with each painful
step I took. It wasn’t until I had safely removed myself from what had been
loaded with potential for the most humiliating scene of my life, that I finally
turned around to look at Jack full on.
I was still mesmerized by the sight of him when I watched as one of the new
passengers opened his mouth, about to talk to Jack.
“Hey, aren't you Ja-” the words never fully formed before I interrupted him.
“Brady, are you coming?”
Unaware that he was being spoken to, Jack maintained his iron clad focus on the screen
of his cell phone, while I began to panic. What the hell was I doing? This was
insane. Not only that, but if I wanted to avoid looking like a complete ass at
this point, I would have no choice but to fully commit and hope it didn’t end
with me being hauled off in cuffs by airport security.
“Brady!” I repeated, this time more sternly.
At last he looked up. Still not entirely sure what was going on, his eyes darted
back and forth between myself and the strangers beside him.
“Come on, this is us.” I was looking directly at him. Jack was about to say something
when I gestured for him to follow me, now with a slightly annoyed expression to
go with it. I watched as he took one more look at the guy who had been about to
chat him up and then quickly fell into step behind me just in time to avoid the
elevator doors closing in on him.

“Thanks. I really appreciate that.” He was looking around like a nervous animal trying to figure out his next move.

Dog Lover who likes her pastries full of cream and sugar...oh...and I write some ;-)

Aside from being an author, I am also a mom to a beautiful little girl. I tell everyone I named her after my great-grandmother (because that's the mature answer), but really, I named her after my favorite princess - just so happens I got lucky and they had the same name...If I wasn't a writer, I would work on a horse ranch - I'm an animal lover (in addition to dogs, horses are at the top of my list). I wear flip-flops pretty much everywhere I go. I would rather stay awake until 5 am than get up at 5 am (years of bar tending have left their mark), if I can, I'm going to the beach AND I will always be nice to people who bring me chocolate...or coffee...if you bring me both, I'll probably love you forever.

A gypsy at heart, I write the way I live, following the story wherever it may lead, always ready to start the next one. This is clearly reflected in my body of work which to date includes everything from Children's Lit to Thrillers.

Review
What can I saw about this book? Sexy, teasing, and holy smokin' hot! The chemistry between Carina and Dylan sparks from the get go and doesn't let up. Even if Carina wants to resist him, there is no denying those bedroom eyes and charming smile. But physical attraction does not mean smooth sailing for this couple.

Carina has one goal in mind, and that is to get a return offer by the end of her internship. Nothing can get in the way of that goal, especially not a tree hugging, charity giving man. I will say about Carina that I loved the growth her character took throughout this book. She has a lot to learn about life, and it was great watching her see how the other half live. There are a lot of bumps along the way, but all while reading, I just couldn't help but hope these two somehow worked out their problems.

I loved Dylan. Sweet, handsome, considerate. The kind of guy every girl dreams of for their very own! When it comes to book boyfriends, you don't want to miss Dylan!

If you are looking for a book that has excellent writing with characters you can really get into and enjoy, pick this up! Whole Latte Love is a whole lot of fun! I highly recommend it!

My Review
Fun read in this second-chance romance.

Tracey has definitely had issues with her mom over the years, and it takes a life-threatening illness to make her start viewing things differently. Add in the stress of raising a daughter while being best friends, but not partners, with her daughter's father, it makes for an emotional start. Steve never really seemed to get over Tracey, but moved on when she rejected him, though he's been the best father his daughter could ask for.

When I first started reading, I didn't always like Steve, actually, because I felt like he made some bad choices. Then again, who hasn't made bad choices at some point in their life? He is a good man overall, and I hung in there to find out the reasons behind his choices. What it boils down to is that Shriver has written another realistic story that could happen to any of us. Life is messy and hard. But when Tracey's mom wakes up and thinks Tracey and Steve are married, Steve really steps up to the plate and does everything he can to help Tracey's family, being there for her like he always has been.

Some of my favorite scenes where when Steve and Tracey were either alone or on outings with just their daughter. The family dynamic is great and you can tell how much they love each other. It makes you hope this family can somehow find their way back together, but real life still gets in the way sometimes, which kept me on the edge, turning pages to find out whether or not they would.

Shriver writes compelling, realistic stories you can't put down! This book is another hit!

Happy reading, my friends!
