#BookReview ~ Love and Other Games ~ Romance Short Story Collection

Title:  Love and Other Games
Genre: New Adult Romance/Short Stories
Chantel's Rating: 5 stars

Love and Other Games, is a collection of four sexy new adult stories centered around athletes competing in the Winter Games by Ana Blaze, Melinda Dozier, Aria Kane, and Kara Leigh Miller.

Worth More Than Gold by Ana Blaze

Trouble With Gold by Melinda Dozier

The Girl Behind the Gold by Aria Kane

Ice Gold by Kara Leigh Miller

My Review:
This is a fun collection of sexy short stories that I quite enjoyed. Truthfully, I only picked it up because I had beta read for Melinda Dozier her story Trouble With Gold before they started submitting to publishers and I loved Ty and Nadia's whirlwind romance and their fun, flirty, and hot story. However, the other stories were quite enjoyable and I would recommend the entire book (though fun-loving Ty still has my heart and I still giggle about Nadia's panties).

I'm not normally a person who reads short stories, but this is a fun collection and a nice introduction to each author's work. The winter games tying them together was a nice touch. If you're looking for new authors to read, you won't be disappointed with this collection and it can point you in the direction of some great authors.

Happy reading!

Author versus Character Interview ~ A Simple Matter of Justice

Today I have the pleasure of sitting down with author Annamaria Bazzi and Samantha, the lead character from her recently released short, A Simple Matter of Justice. Before we get down to business, check out the cover and product description.

Brutally murdered, Samantha discovers her life doesn’t end with her death. While in spirit form, she speaks with a wolf, which offers her a chance to bring her killer to trial…but there are strings attached. Even so, she accepts his proposal, and together they hunt the city. However, when the man responsible can’t be located, she worries the wolf’s proposal might be more than a simple matter of justice.

The trunk opens and she comes face to face with her abductor, rapist and killer.

Samantha receives a chance to bring the killer to justice. In accepting the challenge from a talking wolf, she never imagined she would become a spirit hawk by night. In the turmoil of her new existence, will she find the courage to bring the killer to the forest where the strange and powerful will pass judgment on the man?

The spirit wolf goes with Samantha to help and support in her difficult endeavor. It’s a shock to discover the murderer goes into hiding when he sees her walk by his newspaper stand to go to the office the day after he left her dead in the middle of nowhere.

Scared and afraid, she persists with Steve, the spirit wolf, who lends support and help. Is Samantha ready to discover the secret that protects the forest and can pass judgment and punish criminals? Will she find the strength to watch the judges punish the brutal criminal she is able to bring back to the forest? Will she be able to pick up the pieces and go on living?

First off, thanks for being here. Glad you could join me for a while.  Let's start at the beginning. Want to tell me how the two of you met?

Annamaria:  First off, I’d like to say how wonderful Samantha really is. Good, solid morals give her a compassionate heart and even though she sets out on a quest for justice, it never turns into one of revenge. But, in my regards, I think the spirit hawk is a bit spiteful, haven’t figured out what she has against me.

We met one evening while I was getting out of the car, in my driveway. This crazy bird smashed into my windshield. When I realized it was a hawk, I was afraid to touch it. You should have seen those huge talons. The nutty bird spoke in my mind.

Samantha: What were you thinking, turning me into a freaking bird?

Annamaria: You can talk.

Samantha: You should know, you created me. Are you going to ask me in? It’s cold out here.

Annamaria: I tell you Chantel, I never imagined my writing creations would come to life.

Samantha: What did you think we do, live in a two dimensional world of paper?

Annamaria: Isn’t that the idea of books?

Samantha: That shows how much you know. We can now also live in virtual space.

Annamaria: Inside a computer?

Samantha: Duh!

Chantel: Try not to worry about it too much, Annamaria.  All of my characters have a habit of talking to me too - don't shut up is more like! Okay, so what was your first impression of each other?

Annamaria: I think our first face-to-face impressions were a car wreck.

Samantha: Are you trying to be funny?

Annamaria: Okay, we both know I don’t have a sense of humor, so stop rubbing it in.

Samantha: I might be your creation, but you… you’re a brutal woman.

Annamaria: What did I do?

Samantha: Go read your story (she pouts).

Chantel: Oops...touchy subject? Let's delve a little deeper then, shall we? Annamaria, what does Samantha do that annoys you the most?

Annamaria: I believe Samantha is angry with me because of the opening scene in the book… and she’s upset that for a while she had to turn into a spirit hawk. So, in the evenings while she stayed with me she’d leave droppings all over the house. Let me clarify, she’d leave them in weird places like the fireplace bricks, the kitchen counter, inside the bathtub, dripping down my dresser mirror. Have you any idea what it’s like to have to clean bird poop?

Samantha: I’m a person. You didn’t have to turn me into an animal.

Chantel: I don't know...it could be kind of nice. I take it you didn't think so though, Samantha. I want to give you equal time. If you could say just one thing to Annamaria, what would it be?

Annamaria, you’re a crazy woman.

Chantel: Crazy woman seems a little harsh. I can see some tension here. What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened between you two?

Samantha: The woman must come from a different world.

Chantel: What do you mean?

Samantha: She must have a love hate relationship with people. I mean, have you checked out her new work. She does weird things to people there too.

Chantel: She’s coming out with a new novel?

Samantha: Heck no, I don’t think she knows how to write a novel. No, it’s another short story, for young adults this time.

Chantel: I bet it's great. What does she do to those characters?

Annamaria: You’re going to have to read the story to find out, it’s called White Swans: A Regency Era

Chantel: Hey! I was asking Samantha! LOL Okay, okay. I'll move on to the next question. Annamaria, what do you feel the worst about doing to Samantha?

Annamaria: Now that I’ve had the pleasure (rolls eyes) of meeting Samantha, I must say that turning her into a hawk might have been extreme. As an author, I needed an interesting twist for the story to work. Let me ask you, Samantha, don’t you enjoy soaring in the night sky, free, where no one can hold you back?

Samantha: (pauses for a while) I do have to admit that it is an exhilarating experience.

Annamaria: You see. I gave you a gift no other human will ever feel.

Chantel:  I would love to be able to fly! Though, I'm not so sure about the being a bird part. I look forward to reading Samantha's experiences though. Do you think you two will meet again in the future?

Samantha: God forbid. If I meet up with her again, she might turn me into something more horrifying than a hawk.

Well, I suppose we should wrap this up. I don't want to take up too much of your time, but I do appreciate you ladies stopping by my blog!

#BookReview ~ The Sun Zebra by R. Garcia

Title:    The Sun Zebra
Author: R. Garcia
Genre: ? A children's book for grownups/short stories
Stars:   3-4

The star rating is a little difficult for this book. Basically, I liked it. That makes 3 stars on Goodreads and 4 on Amazon. I really wish they could get together and agree on what the stars mean. Okay, on to the nitty gritty:

This book is a bit different from anything I've read. The stories revolve around the narrator and his family (especially his daughter, Nell, and her imagination). Each chapter is basically its own story and tells some part of their life. The stories seem to have a moral-type ending or something to ponder. I found them enjoyable, though this is not the usual sort of book I read. All in all, it is only around 65 pages and has five different stories included.

My favorite story was the first, "The Sun Zebra," as I thought it really captured childhood and what we forget as we get older. I did, however, have problems with some things in some of the stories. There were a few times I had issues with decisions the narrator made in terms of protecting his child and her feelings (especially during the second story), instead of taking an opportunity to teach right from wrong. However, things turned out okay in the end, but life unfortunately doesn't always work out that way. I guess the reason that this bothered me so much was the way the story was resolved was pretty unbelievable (although I'm not sure if these are true stories and it really happened that way, or just the author's imagination). Anyway, I thought the more responsible thing to do would be to tell Nell the truth about that fact she had made a mistake.

Still, even with that minor complaint, I found the stories enjoyable and it is a quick and easy read if you are looking for something fun and light. A lot of things to make you remember the magic of being a child and seeing the world through a child's eyes again.

Happy reading, everyone!

Wonderful Descriptions ~ #Spotlight on Author Kimberly Sullivan

My next critique partner from www.critiquecircle.com to introduce is the fabulous, Kimberly Sullivan. Kimberly writes both novels and short stories (I always admire the ability to write short stories - I'm too long winded J).

Kimberly writes women's fiction, both first and third person, and her descriptions of the places her characters live is nothing short of amazing. You feel like you are in the remote town settled in the mountains of Italy. You see the way the people are dressed - even enjoy their food with them. She's fantastic!

Here is a link to her short-story, Caves: http://www.snovalleywrites.org/?page_id=518. She won the SnoValley Writes 2012 Writing Contest for the category of writer age 18 and older with this story. Talk about impressive! I'm in awe of her skill.

I'm not sure how long the following link will be good, but Kimberly also had a different short story, Holiday Bliss, accepted for publication in the WriteFrance Anthology. They are offering a free peak for a limited time. Kimberly's story appears on page 47. WriteFrance.com

I've learned a lot from Kimberly about singular/singular agreement, awkward phrasing, and just overall everything. She is a great help and a wonderful inspiration to me as I work through my projects, and she spots my problems and offers up encouragement. I just finished critiquing a novel for her, In the shadow of the Apennines, and I'm excited that she is starting a new book. Soon, I hope she is able to publish a novel in the near future, and  I can share that happy news with all of you.

In the meantime, visit Kimberly's blog and follow her journey: http://kimberlysullivan.wordpress.com/ She does both a travel blog type post on Tuesdays (putting up beautiful pictures of places she's been and letting us armchair explore wonderful vacation spots) and also writing posts on Fridays.

Thanks for reading! Have a great weekend!

Paints a Beautiful Picture ~ #Spotlight on Author Monterey Sirak

Onward in my goal of introducing you to all my great critique partners at www.critiquecircle.com This week, I want to talk about my good friend, Monterey Sirak.  Monterey and I met shortly after I started on critique circle a year ago. Her writing is so beautiful, so wonderful, I knew I had to get to know more about this person and learn from her.

Monterey is as beautiful a person on the inside as her wonderful writing suggests. She has become a true friend to me, and I am so grateful to know her. She writes poetry, and if ever a picture was painted with words, Monterey knows how to do this. Mostly, I've been reading her short stories, and she recently had one, Past Treasures, published in an on-line magazine.  You will be amazed at her skill.  Here's the link http://www.epiphmag.com/EpiphanyMagazineissue15Fiction.html#msi

Monterey is currently working on her memoir, which I have had the privilege of reading. I won't say her life has all been sunshine and bunnies, but she has an incredible strength that comes through in her writing, making it all the more wonderful to read.

Monterey has also had three books of poetry published, available through Amazon. Check out the covers and links to each Amazon page below. If you love poetry, you definitely don't want to miss out on her work.

Her last name was different on this one, but it's still Monterey

Interview with Author Denise Moncrief

I had the opportunity to speak with newly-published author Denise Moncrief today about her short story, Eye of The Storm.

Denise Moncrief Biography

Writing is my passion. I tell people accounting is a skill I learned to earn some money to support my writing habit. I've been writing off and on since I was seventeen. I have a wonderful husband and two incredible children. They not only endure my writing moods, but also encourage me to indulge my passion.

I wrote my first "novel" when I was seventeen. It was seventeen handwritten pages on school-ruled paper and an obvious rip-off of the last Harlequin I read. The urge to write wouldn't let go of me. In my twenties, I started another novel, only to abandon it after Chapter Four or Five. I started writing seriously about eight years ago and now I write every chance I get.

Eye of The Storm
Kieran Talbot’s problems as a resident at a Tallahassee hospital force her to take a leave of absence and escape to the beach. One stormy night, a bruised and bloodied man collapses in the front doorway of her borrowed house.

A storm blows in off the warm Gulf waters, promising to drench the coast with the first downpour of a very hot summer. Kieran retreats to the beach house as the deluge begins. Just as she gets comfortable, the door bursts open. Rain soaked and bloody, Davis Jackson falls through the doorway. He needs a hospital, but he doesn’t want the cops involved. Danger follows Davis wherever he goes. Kieran won’t tell him her story and Davis won’t tell her his. Together they must fight for their lives during a Class Three Hurricane on Florida’s Gulf coast.

Thank you so much, Denise, for agreeing to be here today.  You must be very excited about releasing Eye of The Storm.  Thank you so much for having me here.

Tell us a little bit about Eye of The Storm. I enjoyed writing this story so much. The characters sort of defined the drama. The dark situation evolved from their dark past. The tension seemed to create itself.

I wrote Eye of the Storm for a prompt. The publisher was looking for a beach romance. So I thought to myself, “Everyone will be writing those fun and sun, meet at the beach romances. I wanted to do something a little different. What if there is a hurricane to interrupt their romance?” After that the story wrote itself.

Eye of the Storm didn’t end up in that anthology, but rather was published a stand-alone story.

How very neat that something so wonderful came from a publisher's prompt! I've never thought of trying anything like that before.

Who is your favorite character from the story and why? Oh no doubt my favorite is Davis, the hero. Despite his obvious physical and emotional scars, he still has a sense of mischief. He’s direct, a mean what you say and say what you mean sort of guy. And…he’s hot.

Hot men are always a plus! :-)

Where does the inspiration for you stories come from? Almost anywhere. An overheard conversation. A picture. A movie. A news report. An abandoned house in Arkansas jump-started a new plot for me once. Some little something will capture my imagination.

What made you decide to publish short stories versus novel-length books? Well, actually my first submission to Still Moments Publishing was a full-length novel which as of now I’m in the process of working my first edits. Between the time I submitted Deceptions of the Heart and when they offered me a contract, I submitted the short story Snow White and the Seven Dogs  for their Unleashed Hearts anthology. I’ve written quite a few full-length novels and queried more than a few agents. But I’ve spent a lot of time on writers’ critique sites writing to short story prompts for contests. So writing to a specific prompt on a deadline is not new to me. I think writing the shorter lengths helped honed my skills for writing full-length novels. I like both and will probably continue to submit in all lengths.

We will be sure to be looking for your novel in the future as well as more shorts!

What do you have planned next as far as writing goes?  I would like to stretch my writing by mixing other genres with romantic suspense. Right now, my focus is suspense with a healthy dollop of romance. My work in progress adds a paranormal element that I’m really excited about.

Paranormal is hot right now. Sounds like a great plan!

Most writers I know (myself included) love to read.   Are you a reader as well, or do you prefer to wait for the movie? I would rather read the book. I am an avid reader. My Good Reads profile doesn’t even begin to list all the books I’ve read. Seldom do I think the movie is better than the book. The most recent exception is The Hunger Games. I might have done myself a disservice by watching the movie first.

What is your favorite book (or movie if you’re not a reader)? Favorite book and movie is without a doubt Gone With the Wind. And yes, I liked the book much better.

What advice do you have for other aspiring writers? Write, write, write. Don’t stop collecting ideas and creating stories for them. Don’t let rejection or strong criticism keep you from doing what you love. Most writers do what they do because they want someone to read what they wrote. Find someone to critique your stories. Hone your craft. Go to seminars. Read books on writing. Network with other writers. Join critique sites. But mostly…don’t stop writing and don’t stop submitting to agents and publishers. I waited eight years before I signed my first contract. It was well worth the wait. During that wait, I perfected my writing skills. That moment when I put my signature on my first contract was priceless.

That is wonderful advice, Denise!

Have you released any other titles?  Tell us a little bit about them.  Still Moments Publishing released my first short story in April. Snow White and the Seven Dogs appeared in the Unleashed Hearts anthology. All of my pending released will be published by Still Moments. Sleepless in St. Lucia will be released by in the Something Borrowed, Something Blue anthology in June 2012. My first full-length novel Deceptions of the Heart will be released in the fall of 2012. My short story Trail’s End will be released in the Bullets and Boots anthology in September 2012 and my short story Ghost in the Garden will be released in October 2012 in the Haunted Shadows anthology.

Wow!  Your upcoming release schedule sounds to be busy.  That's terrific!

Anything else you’d like to talk about? I’m a Southern girl. I’ve lived in Louisiana all my life. And yes, I have a drawl. Writing is my passion. I tell people accounting is a skill I learned to earn some money to support my writing habit. I’ve been writing off and on since I was seventeen. I have a wonderful husband and two incredible children. They not only endure my writing moods, but also encourage me to indulge my passion.

Thank you so much for being here today, Denise Moncrief.  I appreciate you sharing with all of us.  Best of luck in your writing career moving forward!
