Excerpt from The Devil Take You

Brae smelled smoke. Looking toward the village she saw a black plume
rising over the burm into the sky. Dropping the bouquet she had been fashioning she ran toward the edge of the moor. She could hear the commotion, the screaming of the town folk as they scurried to assemble a fire brigade. What, she thought belatedly, if they were screaming for another reason? She did not hear the horses from behind until they were upon her.

Some unknown assailant grabbed Brae by the hair, plucking her from the
ground. The pace of the destrier did not even slow as they neared the village. Her breath rushed from her lungs at the force, and she bunched her hand into his enormous black cloak for fear she would fall.

As she struggled to force breath back into her lungs, his large black leather clad hand wrapped shockingly around her backside, firmly but not roughly.

“This one be mine!” The sound of his deep voice chilled her. He was English!
She closed her eyes and remembered what Callum and her father said to her only a few days ago. Had her own father’s words cursed her? Was she to learn the lesson the hard way?

She was afraid to open her eyes but knew by the smell stinging her nose that
they were close to the source of the acrid smoke.

The horses came to a sudden stop and she was dragged by the ankles as another  attacker attempted to tear her from her captor’s lap. Her skirt rode high but the one who held her stayed her arms and she could not reach to pull it back down into place. “She be mine,” he growled at the other man.

“And I changed me mind, I want her!” said the other voice as his hands moved
over her bare legs.

Brae looked up in horror at the raider holding her, as the one who sounded like he was one of her own slid his rough hands ever higher. Her captor leaned in the saddle, placed his large booted foot into the chest of the other man and heaved. Her legs dropped as he fell backward from the blow. Her arms pulled taut and stretched painfully as they supported her weight. He let go and she slid down the horse’s side, falling to the ground in a tangle of voluminous skirts. She did not wait to untangle herself but took the opportunity that presented itself. She leapt to her feet and ran. But the horseman was faster. He grabbed her by the hair yet again, circling it around his hand as he reeled her in.

“Not so fast, Caileag,” he sneered the last as if ’twas a nasty word. “You and I
have some business to attend to.”
